GERATEC's dream to transform and re-model long term care in South Africa is coming
true. As part of this transformation, we are embracing the Eden Alternative philosophy
for creating person-centred communities. Our raison d'etre is "excellence in person-centred
care". What this means in practice is creating the freedom in which Older People
can live in a home-like environment and make their own decisions. Through this approach,
we encourage the continuation of a person's growth, rather than manage their decline.
GERATEC's values of integrity, respect, compassion and innovation underpin all aspect
of our business. We are passionate about continually raising the bar in terms of
quality of service, meeting the needs of the individual, and moving right away from
Medically-nursing those in long-term care. We focus on real care - encouraging residents'
independence, supporting their choices, and acting on the things that are important
to them. We listen when they speak and encourage them to participate in decision
making. We do this because we respect them as people.
As a result, all of our services - caring, catering, staff development and training,
housekeeping, and laundry -
embrace the holistic and person-centred principles of
the Eden Alternative.
Apart from benefiting the residents immeasurably, the advantages extend to the owners,
managers and staff of care homes. The focus on developing staff is, as with the
residents, holistic and person-centred. Happy managers together with happy staff
in a place where everyone is passionate about their work, can only make for a happier
world - however big or small that may be for someone.
